WP 4 Planning and preparation

In this work package, strategic activities (joint calls) of the ERA-IB-2 will be prepared. In planning a call, experiences, results and feedback from past joint calls (ERA-IB-1) will be made use of. Close collaboration with both work package 6 and work package 5 (implementation of joint calls) is envisaged.
In detail it means:

  • Exploring possibilities for joint calls with other ERA-Nets and/or ERA-Net Plus, as well as other European initiatives. This task will focus on addressing the needs of European IB by cooperating with other European initiatives. Own R&D needs, possibilities and targets for cooperation will be identified first. Subsequently, the initiatives that offer cooperation potential will be compiled to a list. ERA-NETs in life sciences, such as EuroTransBio, Systems Biology, and horizontal ones such as ERA-SME, ERA-Cornet, and Eureka´s Eurostars programme are the most prospective targets for cooperation.
  • Pre-selection of research topics for transnational cooperation (long-listing). This task will collate information from the ERA-IB partners as to national/regional R&D priorities in the presence and near future.
  • Enabling and ensuring stakeholder (esp. industry, and within this group, esp. SME) participation in determining (short-listing) call topics. A short online questionnaire will be sent to SMEs through national / EU channels. It will identify the most important barriers to SME participation in transnational R&D, as well as measures seen as most suitable to overcome these barriers. The results will be used in the further stages of WP4. Next, a meeting will be organised in the form of a technical seminar with representatives from industry and academia. Special care will be taken to encourage SMEs participation: each ERA-IB partner will use national/regional information channels to inform companies of the seminar.
  • Discussing and finalising procedures and administrative issues, streamlining call procedures. The output of this task is the MoU for each joint call, signed by all participating funding organisations. The call text, memorandum of understanding, application forms and guidance notes for evaluators will be developed based on experiences from previous calls. The main goal of this task is to streamline procedures, to make them more resource-efficient and thus ultimately suitable for application in a self-sustained network.
