Technology Platform

ERA-IB closely collaborates with the European Technology Platform Sustainable Chemistry (ETP Suschem), section Industrial Biotechnology.

The European Technology Platform for Sustainable Chemistry (SusChem ETP) was launched in July 2004 by the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC), the European Association for Bioindustries (EuropaBio) and the European Commission. The main goal of the SusChem ETP is to support the long-term success of the European Chemistry supply chain as a whole. The SusChem ETP is led by the European Chemical Industry and it has identified three technologies that are of key importance for a competitive and sustainable chemical industry in Europe. One of these technologies is Industrial Biotechnology, for which the stake-holders are united in the so called Section IB (ETPS-IB).

The tasks of ERA-IB and ETPS-IB are complementary: the ETPS-IB has taken the lead in defining the strategic research priorities relevant for the European industry, whereas ERA-IB will focus on enhanced synergy and cooperation between national research programmes and strategies. The initiatives complement each other in objectives and activities and both are essential for the development of a strong ERA in Industrial Biotechnology.

Close cooperation between ERA-IB and ETPS-IB will ensure:

  • A coordinated joint approach of European Members States in the research and development of the most important technologies in IB,
  • joint strategic and innovative research programmes between government and industry and
  • enhanced translation of research results into application and innovation.
